ABOUT
Spatial performance, culture, and art are movement itself, and art comes alive in this movement. The motif of our design is defined by the movements expressed in art, and these play an important role not only in the functional elements of a building, but also in its form. Through an approach that balances rational function with formal expression, we present an impressive design direction based on the functional systems of the building.
We set up a design process based on the three project goals described above. Through this process, Chungnam Arts Center is born as a form, a work of art, that encompasses the entire building through a single movement and achieves harmony with its surroundings.
Site Analysis
Through Chungnam Arts Center, we aim to rebuild the cultural ecosystem of Chungcheongnam-do and serve as a hub for wide-ranging cultural exchange with surrounding cities. As the new core of the Naepo New Town Cultural Facility District, it aims to be the connecting point between nature and the city, promoting interaction with surrounding facilities centered on performing arts thereby forming a cultural cluster that connects people.

Concept Diagrams
The building minimizes its footprint on the site to return as much park space to the city as possible. The sided site building has no front or back, allowing the beautiful building to be viewed from anywhere. The building is rotated on its axis to optimize the interior views and provide natural connectivity with the Chungnam Provincial Library and the Art Museum. As the building rotates, four plazas are created providing unique views and connections to their surroundings from different parts of the building.
The building’s accessibility works seamlessly from both the inside and outside, creating spaces that are unique. Each floor clearly includes all functions, and the park is connected through a simple vertical circulation line, providing beautiful views. The form of the roof of the Chungnam Arts Center harmonizes with the Chungnam Art Museum, folding and attractively reflecting the surrounding landscape. The roof, raised through cuts, draws nature into the building and has an elegant form.
Plans
When Docheong-daero is converted into a car-free street, Chungnam Arts Center Welcome Hill will expand into a space that welcomes the entire cultural facility district. Welcome Hill will create a natural connection point between the city and Hongye Park, and at the meeting point, the main entrances of Chungnam Arts Center and Chungnam Museum of Art will be connected at the same level, continuing the flow of art and culture. The building is approachable from many sides and interacts with the external environment, constantly connecting people to art and nature.
Aerial View
The visitor’s journey to experience great architecture begins with access. The building must consider and enhance its context to create unique, authentic, and memorable moments. Every moment a visitor approaches from the streets of the city, passes Welcome Hill, and experiences Chungnam Arts Center, is marked by magnificent natural views, diverse connections to adjacent facilities, and encounters with serendipitous events. We expand our visitors’ experience through this multifaceted approach and connectivity.
The Visitor's Journey
The concert hall is planned to accommodate approximately 1,000 seats, and can be expanded to accommodate up to 1,200 seats if necessary. The beautiful curves of the roof and exterior materials continue into the interior of the performance hall, with walls finished with warm-toned wood and the curves of the arched ceiling focusing the audience's gaze on the stage and performance. It consists of two floors and is equipped with a reverberation control system that can be connected on all floors and supports a variety of performances.
Multipurpose Performance Hall
Using the motif of the waves created by a conductor’s baton and the curves drawn in the air by a dancer’s toes, our façade expresses artistic movement. The curves of the roof and the glass façade provide panoramic views through the main lobby and foyer, while the dancing columns and curtains form a rhythmic structure that surrounds the BOH and the public arts complex. The building's façade changes depending on the viewpoint, and the roof, which draws elegant and natural lines, harmonizes with the natural landscape.
Exterior View
Chungnam Arts Center interacts with the external plazas formed by the rotation of the building’s axis and the beautiful natural environment. Welcome Hill promotes access and inflow to the city and serves as a psychological sanctuary for visitors, harmoniously connecting nature, culture, and urban life.
