ABOUT

The primary objective of this project is to transform the historic industrial building on Nydalsveien 32B into a multi-use housing structure, while maintaining the qualities of the existing building.

Although the existing building consists of multiple extensions, it maintains a cohesive façade and distinctive factory spaces.

To preserve the historic façade, the housing is elevated above the existing factory space, which becomes a central courtyard.

This gesture preserves the hierarchy of the existing building while meeting the functional requirements. It creates a meeting place for residents and visitors and – architecturally – between contemporary and historic.

Exterior Render

Render-1

The maintained qualities of the historic industrial buildings consist primarily of the façade and open factory spaces. The majority of the housing is placed on top of the building in a volume that encircles the factory spaces and transforms them into a central courtyard.

A communal courtyard is created by removing the roofs of the central factory space. This allows abundant daylight into the commercial spaces on the ground floor and into the housing above.

From the bustling public courtyard, residents can retreat to an exclusive rooftop terrace or – for total privacy – to individual terraces.
